My misspent youth sometimes comes in handy

This morning David was telling me that Karen, his director for Book of Days, brought some Hoppe's #9 gun cleaning solvent to rehearsal last night. (A plot point concerns the smell of a clean gun versus a fired one.) David said "It smells like.... "

"Like gun cleaner."

"Yeah." And then he paused and looked at me.

"I was in the rifle club in high school." (And, I shared a house with Mollie for several years and we'd watch tv in our not fabulously well-ventilated basement while she'd clean her musket.)

"Oh."

So we talked about my firearms experience a bit and eventually a thought trickled through his brain. Leta has handled firearms and claims to have been a decent shot. (A decent shot, not a great one. I was in the rifle club, not on the rifle team, after all.)

"Yep. So keep that in mind the next time you want to make fun of me."

Bet he doesn't make one of those jokes at my expense that he thinks are funnier than I do for at least the next 18 hours.

You're a very surprising and scary little woman, Leta.

*I* won't make ANY jokes about you for at least 48 hours. That's how scared I am.

My first job was working as a trap setter & puller at the Milwaukee Gun Club.

I have to say, that scared me away from guns a good deal. Recreational evenings for members seemed to go like this:

* Arrive and have a beer
* Shoot a set with the team
* Hang out and have a beer
* Shoot a set with the team
* Hang out and have a beer
* Shoot a set with the team
* Hang out and have a beer, or two
* Drive at least 5 and maybe 30 miles home

Also, my fellow employees noticed that there wasn't much air circulation in the little bunkers where trap setters sit. This made it easier to share the smoke emanating from controlled substances.

And I thought I had a checkered past (well, for my white-bread upbringing)! Got any pointers for first-timers? Besides "if it's loaded, don't point it at anything you don't intend to shoot"? ;)

Besides "if it's loaded, don't point it at anything you don't intend to shoot"?

Always treat it as if it is loaded goes in front of that one. If it isn't broken down for cleaning, always treat a gun as if it is loaded. Sadly
actors have died
thinking of guns as toys. Even prop guns can kill.
